Horse Rider Confidence
Picture
Caroline Andrews, Horse Rider Confidence Specialist, shares some of her experience in working with nervous horse riders.

‘Horse rider confidence is something we often don’t appreciate until we no longer have it, its loss can occur for several reasons:
  • An accident or ‘scary’ incident has occurred that brought home to you the unpredictability of horses;
  • People around you tell you nothing but ‘scary’ stories of accidents with horses and, much like a child who becomes frightened to sleep after too many ghost stories, your imagination goes into overload and your confidence is gone;
  • You had a wonderful horse for years who you knew well and now find you have a new horse and feel out of control or out of your depth;
  • You are coming back to riding after a break and find that, while you long to ride, you feel anxious about it;
  • You now have more responsibility in your life, for example, children, a mortgage, a full time job;
  • You simply feel you won’t bounce as easily as you did when you were younger so have become more fearful; or
  • You may not know, your confidence has just eroded over time!

Whatever the reason, loss of confidence can cause stress, anxiety and fear in your life and take away the pleasure you seek when with your horse. Some people are even fearful on the ground when handling their horse (something I have experienced myself).

Here are 3 of my top tips for starting to build your confidence:
  • Your mind does not know the difference between imagined scenarios and real ones so imagine good riding experiences. It takes practice but will start to re-programme your subconscious;
  • Avoid listening to other people's 'bad' experiences, only engage in and talk about good experiences as this will move you towards positive thinking;
  • Go easy on yourself, often we are the ones who put the most pressure on ourselves, it's ok to be where you are right now with your confidence, take baby steps.

Using my 'What If Management Method'© I can help build horse rider confidence for riders like you.'
