Today I’d like to talk about frustration (just one of many unhelpful feelings) as it’s coming up a lot for me in my reality and I even find myself getting frustrated when I read or hear the word. I have found myself thinking ‘why do I keep hearing about people getting frustrated, it’s so frustrating’ well, guess what? It’s a reflection of what’s going on in me, because it is a feeling that challenges me my subconscious thinks I want more of it and so points out to me every opportunity it can find for me to experience it over and over, a catch 22. Yes, it even happens to me and I ‘should’ know better but you know what? I am a human being first and a therapist/coach second, I’m not perfect.
The main thing is I have now tuned in to what’s going on and I can do something about it. I can choose to get frustrated or not, I can choose to feel something different, I can choose to see the opportunity to help people who feel frustrated, a chance to showcase my skills and help them feel differently if they want to.
How does all of this apply to riding horses? Well, in the early days when you are attempting to build your confidence, frustration can occur often if you let it. You set off to the yard or field with the high hopes that today will be the day you saddle up and ride without a care in the world. You get there and suddenly your resolve melts away or you get on and find yourself feeling wobbly, unable to go out for that ride you planned and you get off, frustrated (and probably a bunch of other feelings too).
How can you feel differently? Well, you can choose to have a different perspective on it:
If you want to feel frustrated (or whatever the unhelpful feeling is for you) then that’s ok, just remember it’s a choice. Unhelpful feelings operate at a lower, denser vibration of energy and will keep us stuck, they block out more positive feelings such as happiness and joy and until we choose to put them aside our progress will be more challenging. You can focus on positive feelings right now, think about things that make you happy, notice things around you as you go through your day that create good feelings and make a habit of it so these feelings become your default. It takes time and conscious effort so why not start right now?
